Exploring Advanced Luminescence and Scintillation Materials: High-energy excitations often result in luminescence (scintillation), but the intricate relaxation processes involved can be challenging to describe. Our research explores these complex phenomena while advancing materials R&D, focusing on applications such as high-energy calorimetry, security systems, x-ray imaging, radioactivity metrology, and environmental monitoring. Given that these essential phenomena occur within extremely short timescales (nanoseconds to picoseconds) under X-ray or electronic excitation, we are pioneering the development of novel materials. This includes creating advanced phosphors in microcrystalline fibers and thin films for imaging applications, as well as single crystals designed for next-generation high-energy calorimeters. Another significant area of focus is nanoscintillators, which provide valuable insights into relaxation processes and offer exciting potential for practical applications. These include ultra-fast emitters for time-of-flight systems, liquid scintillators, theranostics agents and porous architectures for detecting radioactive gases. The latter is a key component of our leadership in the European SPARTE project. Curious to learn more? Watch our latest layman-friendly video that dives deeper into this research: here

To pursue our goals, we have developed several specific experiments:

• Radioluminescence (cw and pulsed for fast timing analysis)

• Cathodoluminescence

• Thermoluminescence, afterglow and bright-burn analysis

• Light yield measurement under X-ray excitation.

• Persistent Luminescence analysis
