Seismic waves radiated from an earthquake can trigger other earthquakes more than 1000 km away from the epicenter. This phenomenon, known as dynamic triggering of earthquakes, occurs when the seismic waves perturb other faults, even if the waves are very weak. It is thus surprising and the underlying mechanism is still not fully understood. To tackle this problem from the microscopic point of view, here we use discrete element simulation to investigate the response of earthquake faults to acoustic waves, and find quantitative conditions for a sheared granular system to be unstable.
