Terahertz (THz) spectroscopy, situated between the microwave and infrared regions of the electromagnetic spectrum, has seen significant advancements since the mid-1990s, driven by developments in optoelectronics and femtosecond laser technologies. In this seminar, I will present our recent work using THz time-domain spectroscopy (TDS) to probe light–matter interactions at the micro- and nanoscale, with a special emphasis on its applications across all three phases of matter: gas, liquid, and solid.
In the diluted/gas phase, I will show how we use THz spectroscopy to detect and characterize volatile organic molecules and aerosols, with potential applications in health, environment, and sensing. In the liquid phase, I will discuss how THz measurements can help investigate the picosecond dynamics of aqueous solutions, and highlight the broad space for fundamental studies that remains open in this field. In the solid state, I will illustrate how we probe phonons, polaritons, and lattice dynamics in molecular crystals and nanostructured materials, in connection with theoretical modelling.
I will conclude by presenting the THz instruments now available at the adjacent Institut des Nanotechnologies de Lyon (INL), including near-field field-enhancement approaches and cryogenic operation.
