Nonlinear and Tunable optical nanostructures
Metasurfaces and nano-objects offer a unique playground to tailor the electromagnetic field at the subwavelength scale to control polarization, wavefront, nonlinear processes, and temporal dynamics. Tunability of the optical response of these structures is challenging due to the nanoscale size of their constitutive elements. A popular solution to tune nanostructures is all-optical modulation, which exploits the ultrafast nonlinear response of materials. However, the nonlinear response of materials is inherently very weak and, therefore, requires optical excitations with large values of fluence. Such a weak response can be enhanced by properly designing the near-field distribution inside materials, leading to the miniaturization of nonlinear optical devices and large optical response variations on the picosecond timescale.
