''The principal of "action spectroscopy" in combination with greatly expanding capabilities in experimental and computational domains has brought to the fore the application of optical spectroscopy to determine the structures of gas-phase ions. With the support of modern techniques of mass spectrometry, moelcules ranging from simple organics and inorganics up to proteins, enzymes and other complex large species can be brought into the gas phase, where the spectroscopic approach gives precise and unambiguous information about their structures. We will explore the development and principles of these capabilities, drawing on various examples, with comparisons with condensed-phase behavior and computational results.''
