''The behavior of an aqueous solution of sodium chloride and of an ionic liquid in molecular dynamics simulations under electrowetting conditions at the nanoscale will be discussed. In both cases, asymmetric change in the contact angle of the liquid droplet with respect to the charge density of the solid surface was observed. Interestingly, the trend observed could not be explained by thermodynamic arguments. Instead, it was found that molecular factors such as the solvation shell stability or the molecular orientation of ions in the vicinity of the three-phase contact line seem to be key factors that drive the relative magnitude of the contact angle reduction on positively and negatively charged surfaces.''
