''For decades, ferroelectric and ferroelastic domain walls have been considered only as interfaces, pertinent for physical properties through their motion or their interaction with defects, but without specific properties of their own. This has changed with the comprehension that domain walls often exhibit completely different physical properties than the bulk of the domains, such as enhanced conductivity in insulators, or polar properties in non-polar materials. Here, I will report optical and electron microscopy studies of domain walls in the prototypical ferroelectric lithium niobate [1–5] and the prototypical ferroelastic calcium titanate [6], where conductive domain walls and polar domain walls have been observed, respectively.
