Contribution to the understanding of the microscopic mechanisms of heat transport in complex crystalline structures

''If in the past, thermal management was far from being the first priority, heat release and absorption represents today one of the biggest bottlenecks for designing next generation devices in many applications at every scale. With the current progresses in the engineering of micro- and nano-structures, it becomes possible to design advanced thermal systems with the aim of controlling thermal transport, and to transpose to heat many applications designed for sound. Such engineering can even be realized at the scale of the unit cell, by crystal chemistry. Structural complexity exemplifies such approach and represents a promising strategy for disentangling thermal and electrical transports, allowing thus an efficient reduction of the heat propagation, while preserving the electrical conduction. In this context, a frequency-dependent description of thermal transport is then crucial. This requires the determination of the phonon lifetimes, which represents today both a theoretical and experimental challenge, remaining at the limits of the actual instruments capabilities.
