''Les origines du microscope électronique
Ninety years have passed since the invention of the electron microscope, an instrument that has had a profound impact on our understanding of the world both from scientific and technological perspectives. This talk will explore the origins of the electron microscope with a particular focus on the instrument as a means to reflect upon the often-artificial separation of ideas/concepts (science?) and the realisation of a practical, usable and useful characterisation tool (engineering?).
Knowledge of the electron microscope is neither assumed nor required to participate to this presentation. The story is simply a well-documented example of how inventions come about and will hopefully in a minor and modest manner offer some insight in to the contemporary process of innovation that is taking place all around us at the iLM and beyond.
