Acoustic Vibrations of Nano-Object
Very low frequency spectroscopy (a few GHz ~ 0.3 cm-1) is mainly concerned with acoustic waves propagating in a solid (Brillouin: acoustic phonons) allowing to probe the mechanical properties of the material on the scale of several hundreds of nanometers, whereas the Raman (optical phonons) at higher frequency (> 100 cm-1 ~ 3000GHz) is concerned with the vibrations of the molecular bonds, that is to say on a nanometric scale. When the size of the probed objects is less than half the period of the wavelength but greater than the nanometer, new modes of vibration appear. These are modes of acoustic vibrations of the nano-objects as a whole object, induced by the confinement of acoustic waves, and whose frequencies are inversely proportional to the dimensions of the object studied.
