Nanoparticles are at the heart of numerous everyday applications, transcending the main scientific disciplines: Chemistry, Biology and Physics. One way to understand the fundamental Physics and Chemical-physics ruling the nanoworld and imagine its future applications is to study optical properties of luminescent nano-objects. From doped insulators to semiconductor quantum dots, the luminescence team studies the effects on their emission properties of modifications of their environment, such as electric field, temperature, refractive index or chemical structure. Another way is to investigate the mechanical properties of the nano-objects. From gold nanodimers to semiconductor nanoplatelets, the team studies the effect of nanoparticle shape, crystallinity, composition and surface chemistry, as well as the mechanical and opto-mechanical coupling between nano-objects.Our research applications range from different types of nano-probes to new detectors. To pursue our goals, we have developed several highly customized, state-of-the-art nano-optics experiments:
• Hybrid confocal/AFM microscope
• Ultra-stable cryogenic confocal microscope
• Near-infrared to telecom wavelengths confocal microscope
• Wide-field microscope coupled to the world fastest single photon ebCMOS camera
• Achromatic confocal microscope with deep-UV capabilities
• Single nano-object inelastic light scattering spectroscopies: Brillouin, Low-frequency Raman, and Raman
All our microscopes feature specific fast single photon counting and spectroscopic
equipment.
