''Atomic clusters are small particles consisting of a countable number of atoms that can exhibit physical and chemical properties that often are different from bulk materials. Due to the large number of undercoordinated atoms, clusters of (transition-) metals are often considered as model systems for the active site in heterogeneous catalysis. The study of gas-phase clusters as model systems for catalysts with mass-spectrometric and spectroscopic techniques offers the possibility to elucidate fundamental interactions of molecules with a surface that is known with atomic precision, offering a well-defined local geometric and electronic structure. In this talk, I will present IR spectroscopic studies of clusters and clusters interacting with small molecules of relevance for catalytic processes, and will discuss how these studies can be relevant for the rational design of new catalysts.''
