''Experimental surface forces studies of different classes of polymer- bearing surfaces were carried out using the surface forces apparatus and similar molecular techniques in order to elucidate the role of different parameters, such as polymer conformation, elasticity, solvent quality, ionic strength, in controlling friction and adhesion between polymer-bearing surfaces. To determine structure/property correlations, we irreversibly attached the polymer materials onto modified mica and silica surfaces with a controlled surface density. Given the possibilities of irreversibly attaching polymers at surfaces, we examined systematically the effect of grafting density and environmental conditions on the surface forces and mechanical properties of different polymer-bearing surfaces. .
